Interested in making a difference in the lives of our unhoused neighbors? Come learn about the Miracle Messages* Santa Cruz Chapter, a unique volunteer opportunity that empowers community members to tap into the power of relationships, connect unhoused individuals with services, and change the narrative around homelessness. Marlena De Castro, the Santa Cruz County Community Outreach and Engagement Specialist, will present and share about:
*Miracle Messages’ programs and services *Our belief in the power of relationships *Volunteer roles and opportunities *Your ability to be part of the solution to homelessness

This event is open to all interested in this issue, including the Association of Faith Communities, Mid-County Homeless Coalition, Santa Cruz Interfaith Network, service providers, and potential volunteers.

After the presentation, we will have light refreshments and an opportunity to chat with Marlena and connect with like-minded neighbors engaged with the SC Chapter. We hope to see you there!

We also encourage people to attend or volunteer at Miracle Messages’ community barbecue Aug. 22 from 1-3 at the Harvey West Park Friendship garden, where there will be a resource fair, food, and community building among volunteers.

Miracle Messages is an award-winning 501(c)(3) nonprofit that helps people experiencing homelessness rebuild their social support systems and financial security. Our core programs include family reunification services, a phone buddy program, and basic income pilots. We believe that relational poverty is poverty, and our mission is to ensure that no one goes through homelessness alone, and no one feels helpless on this issue.

From local staff member Marlena de Castro: In my role, I work to build a strong local chapter by mobilizing volunteers, strengthening partnerships, and connecting directly with our unhoused neighbors through programs like family reunification, our phone buddy system, and direct cash transfers. My goal is to bring community organizations, service providers, and compassionate individuals together so we can create a more connected, supportive, and human-centered response to homelessness—right here in our community.
