Demilitarize police in Santa Cruz with state law AB 481

Peter Gelblum of the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) and Keenan Lorenzato of the Santa Cruz Friends Meeting and the American Friends Service Committee (AFSC) will explain laws regarding California police militarization and share ways we can have an impact throughout Santa Cruz County—including city police and the university.

California law (AB481) provides us with the right to have citizen oversight of our police departments. Today many local departments have developed arsenals of equipment more appropriate for military use. This presentation will help prepare us as citizens to make informed comments to our elected officials about the type of police equipment we would like to see in our communities and create the fair and just policing that we want.

We’ll be discussing:

  • What does state law AB481 require of police departments?

  • Where can we find reports?

  • What military equipment do Santa Cruz jurisdictions have?

  • What would we like to see changed in regards to our police military arsenal and policy?

  • And finally what steps can we take to make our voices heard and collectively do more to demilitarize our police?

  • As we are committed to participating in our democracy through speaking out at public meetings, attending protests and marches, we need to ensure that we can practice these rights without facing a militarized presence from our police!
